DD-WRT/Tomato firmware, is it worth changing? - Ars
DD-WRT » Community
Tomato firmware is similar to DD-WRT,and also based off Linux, but opts for a better balance between performance and features, and does so very efficiently. Tomato has a simple, graphically rich interface, making it easy for even beginners to pickup. Also, DD-WRT isn’t as stable, and is always in a “Beta” stage, while Tomato by Shibby has gained a lot of applause as one of the most stable and balanced Tomato forks of today. Then again, Tomato has lesser “ reboots ” as compared to DD-WRT, so you’d save both a lot of time and efforts. Common Features Between Tomato and DD-WRT. Some of the common features include a file server, advanced Quality-of-Service (QoS), Telnet and Samba server, port triggering and forwarding, improved firewall settings, simple navigation, VPN client and server support, extended WiFi coverage etc. DD-WRT = Features + quite easy to install and setup through web interface. Recommended for users who need a lot of control over the network (admins, engineers…). Tomato = Less features than DD-WRT but offers better stability, lightweight and overall performance. Setup is easiest through web interface. Sep 15, 2011 · Tomato is strong for access control and internet monitoring. OpenWRT is strong for added features (especially Asterisk). DDWRT as far as I can tell is a very interesting software package but not as good as Tomato for access control, and not as good as OpenWRT for additional software.
